Team building — one of the greatest workplace methods to give your team a boost and build a sense of camaraderie.

But to fall back to the most common scavenger hunt activity year after year — let's shake it up a little! At Front+Centre, we love dedicating time to come together as a team, and continually hear about all the cool activities that some of our customers get up to with their own teams.

So, whether you’re looking for team building activities for the new year ice breaker, group workshops, training days or workplace functions, we’ve got you covered.

1. Challenge your team and do an escape room

The perfect opportunity to encourage your team to collaborate while trying to solve clues to escape. If you’re based in Wellington, we know Escape Rooms Wellington and Escape Mate are both popular rooms to try!

Skills: problem solving, teamwork, communication.

2. Host a games tournament (virtual or in-person)

If your team can get together in-person, suggested games include some classic card and board game challenges, or you could arrange a workplace Olympics that involves office chair races, rubber band archery, paper plane throwing and more. Hosting a games event virtually is also possible, with games like skribbl, codenames, or guess who. A bit of healthy competition is always good, even if the prize is just bragging rights!

Skills: collaboration, decision making, problem solving.

3. Have a SingStar or talent show competition

We know Greg over there is waiting for his time to shine and show off his performing side! At Front+Centre, we jump at any chance to be creative and have a laugh. Putting on a show is a great opportunity for some fun and entertainment while building comfort and trust within a team. Want to make it hybrid? Use one of Front+Centre’s big spaces to get the perfect hybrid audio set up.

Skills: trust, empathy, stepping out of your comfort zone.

4. Immerse yourselves in Te Ao Māori

At Front+Centre, we were privileged to take part in a wider organisation day hosted at Pipitea Marae. Led by Ngāti Pōneke to help us strengthen our cultural confidence, we learnt waiata and were given the opportunity to weave a beautiful harakeke art piece as a group to then display on the wall of our collaboration space.

Skills: cultural confidence, creativity, collaboration.

5. Hold a volunteer day

Pick a charity or a community group, think about what you want to do to help, and mark it on the calendar. Some ideas? Organising a public space cleanup, helping your local food bank or animal shelter, bringing together care packages, hosting a sausage sizzle, the list goes on!

Skills: organisation, collaboration, empathy.

6. Create a showreel

We recently had the chance to create a team showreel of our everyday life at Front+Centre. This was a great way to see the many passions and talents our team has both inside and outside of the workplace, and is something we'll all remember throughout our careers.

Skills: collaboration, communication.

7. Teams who eat together, stay together

At Front+Centre we love food! So dedicating time to sit down and eat as a team has been by far one of the simplest yet effective team building activities together. Whether it’s checking the catering menu for meetings or trying out the local foods recommended by our Customer Concierge Denise, food brings our team together. Celebrating big milestones with one another, checking in with one another and bonding is all possible with a bit of kai. And the best part? Eating as a team eliminates the chance of someone being hangry!

Skills: communication, sharing, pitching in.

So it’s fair to say that at Front+Centre we encourage you to make team building days a part of your yearly workplace plan. Whether everyone is back in the office, or your workplace is now hybrid, it’s always good to bring your team together and collaborate in a not-so-demanding way.
